I have a confession to make:  I was never particularly into the quality of sound.

My oldest brother would get into my car and he would almost immediately make a scrunchy face and fiddle with the radio.  Then he would look at me triumphantly.  “There!  Isn’t that better?” He would ask, although it wasn’t a question; it was a declaration of success.  I would agree enthusiastically, although, truth be told, even if I noticed, I didn’t really care.

That’s what I mean – it never mattered to me.  It didn’t matter to me to the point that I didn’t even notice.  The melody of music?  Sure.  The poetry?  Heck yeah.  Does it have a good beat and I can dance to it?  Awesome.  But the highs, the bass, the reverb?  Whatever.  A little static?  Who cares?  Quality wasn’t on my mind.

Don’t get me wrong, I love a good gadget – laptop, tablet, fitness watch, smart phone – woohoo!  These modern toys are as exciting to play with as a new Barbie doll used to be.  But I was perfectly content to get the cheapest earbuds the drug store sold.

Then I started working for a headset company.  Bluetooth, corded, wireless, UC Communications, soft phones, SoundGuard Acoustic Limiting, WindSmart Technology – words that may have sounded familiar, but still I had a lot to learn.

Now, not only do I care, I’m a snob!  Active noise cancelling, binaural, smart sensors, whispered alerts – sign me up.  I scoff at the inferior sound quality, the rudimentary or non-existent features, the weak bass notes of the lesser headphones and earbuds.  Only the best will do, and I’m proud to both use it and to represent it.

To take and make phone calls at my desk, my choice is the Plantronics Voyager Focus.  Noise cancelling features block out ambient noise in my office while at the same time protecting the caller at the other end from having to hear the conversations, rustling papers and tapping keyboards going on around me.  While driving, the Voyager 5200, paired with my phone’s Bluetooth, allows me to answer, make, and end calls hands-free, so my attention doesn’t leave the road.  With voice recognition, I can easily connect to my phone’s AI system, getting directions and traffic reports.  My BackBeat Fit provides a comfortable, wire-free connection to my favorite playlist, boosting my energy and motivation to add another rep, another mile, another few minutes to my workout.

My new confession?  I am so into the quality of sound.  I care how you sound to me and how I sound to you – which is why I love Plantronics!
